President rejects adjournment motion proposed by TDP MPs to discuss matter

Telugu Desam Partry (TDP) MPs and MLCs staged a protest outside the state Legislative Assembly on Monday to protest the government’s “indifference to the crisis in the agricultural sector” and the plight of hundreds of thousands of farmers.

Attending the protest, TDP National General Secretary N. Lokesh, MLC B. Arjunudu and MPs K. Atchannaidu, Nimmala Rama Naidu, Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary and N. Chinarajappa lamented the government’s “negligent attitude” and demanded that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy should see for himself the problems facing farmers.

An adjournment motion proposed by TDP MPs in the Assembly to have a discussion on the same subject was rejected by Speaker Thammineni Seetharam.

Meanwhile, a group of farmers tried to besiege the Legislative Assembly demanding that the government take urgent action to solve their problems. But they were arrested by the police.

Speaking to the media, Ichchapuram MLA Bendalam Ashok and his counterpart Undi Mantena Ramaraju said that “the sordid situation in the agricultural sector was evident from the dubious distinction won by Andhra Pradesh in the suicide of a farmer”. ‘

They said Andhra Pradesh was second in sharecropper suicides and third overall in farmer suicides. Payments for purchased paddy were delayed for several months and there were several other issues that the government failed to address. Agricultural mechanization has made little headway and the much publicized Rythu Bharosa Kendras have proved of little use to farmers, they said.
