Alexander Pavlovsky, a farmer from Odessa, started a food charity for his compatriots fleeing the war.

Before the invasion, he owned a large farm where he grew strawberries, grains and vegetables. For 40 days, he and his family have been sleeping every night in a basement.

Pavlovsky has dedicated himself to launching the Free Borscht Initiative, a charity that buys crops from local farmers and delivers boxes of fresh food to refugees in need.

“Odessa is not safe, it is hit by rockets. But it’s relatively safe compared to Mariupol and other places where they’re living hell,” he told the BBC.

Ukrainian farmers are struggling to sell their produce due to the Russian occupation, he says. Meanwhile, people are hungry.

“My idea is to connect the two: buy from local farmers, help them support their families. Give it to people in need, who have nothing at all.

It has so far distributed around 200 boxes containing enough food to feed a family for three to four days.

“My goal is to distribute 1,000 every two weeks, maybe more if I can,” he said, adding that up to 3,000 evacuees arrive in Odessa every day.

“People who come from places like Mariupol, the first emotion that comes to mind is shame – they are ashamed to receive help.

“They are not used to this in their previous life. But they need it. »
