Jono Carroll faces Brazilian Mesquita on Saturday night as he prepares for the world title next year

Dublin lightweight Jono Carroll faces Brazilian Aelio Mesquita in Dubai on Saturday night as he remains busy ahead of his world title shot next year.

Carroll will face Mesquita (20-5-1) on the undercard of Philippine powerhouse John Riel Casimero’s WBO bantamweight title defense against England’s Paul Butler.

Casimero is one of two world title fights on the night as England’s Sunny Edwards makes a mandatory defense of his IBF flyweight title against Filipino Jayson Mama.

Carroll (20-2-1) secured an IBF super featherweight title shot with a victory over American Andy Vences in his world title eliminator in Florida in November.

He is awaiting the outcome of Roger Gutiérrez’s title defense against Chris Colbert in January and has chosen to stay active by taking Mesquita’s fight in the short term.

If all goes according to plan, Carroll will attempt his second shot for a world title early next year, after being beaten on points by Tevin Farmer in their IBF junior flyweight competition in 2019.

He’s won four of his five fights since, including an impressive technical knockout of former world champion Scott Quigg at Manchester Arena last year.

Jono Carroll celebrates his victory over Scott Quigg at Manchester Arena in 2020.

Mesquita, from Sao Paulo, is no slouch and has scored 18 of his 20 knockout victories, although his five losses have come in his last ten games.

These defeats all came outside of Brazil against high caliber fighters such as the undefeated Shakur Stevenson (6-0-0) and Saul Rodriguez (22-0-1).

Carroll, 29, won’t be the only Irish fighter on the bill as undefeated Waterford welterweight Rohan Date (12-0-1), who lives in Dubai, takes on Filipino Kelvin Dotel (14-4-0 ).
