Ooty-based Lawrencedale Agro Processing India (LEAF), a leading integrated agricultural technology company, plans to transform the lives of more than three million marginalized and tribal smallholder farmers over the next two years, a senior executive has said.

“We cannot afford to ignore the great positive force this segment can bring to the rural landscape in India,” Palat Vijayaraghavan, Founder and CEO of LEAF, said in an interview.

According to him, the marginalized agricultural community, which accounts for about 85% of the agricultural sector, can significantly boost the consumption of multiple services in India to help the country reach its GDP target of $5 trillion.

To achieve this goal, LEAF is implementing an aggressive go-to-market strategy through its LEAF Farmer Network (LFN) technology platform powered by Mastercard and aligned with multiple stakeholders in the agricultural ecosystem.

Mr. Vijayaraghavan said that a farmer goes through several transactions from harvest to completion. There are many transactions, mostly done in cash, and therefore there is no record. The biggest problem for many service providers is the lack of real and transparent actionable data.

LFN is a differentiated platform launched to solve the multiple challenges of farmers seamlessly. The whole process is managed by the farmers, with the support of the LEAF field teams.

LFN solves this specific problem by harnessing the power of technology to route all transactions through the digital platform. This would help ecosystem partners analyze and make crucial business decisions based on daily farmer transaction data.

“The scale with which we enable transactions is enormous. The core of LFN is that it enables transparency of all transactions throughout the farming lifecycle,” he said.

“This initiative will also support farmers with comprehensive training and capacity building throughout the harvest lifecycle, including post-harvest management to reduce wastage,” he said.
