The issue of farm debt relief, among other demands, is once again in the spotlight as farmer groups across the state led by Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh Smiti, a group that was at the forefront of the farmers’ agitation against the Farm Bills on September 12 picketed the residences of the minister and government deputies from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Sarvan Singh Pandher, secretary general of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh committee’s Punjab unit, said farmers staged sit-ins outside the residences of ministers and MPs in 31 different locations in 16 districts of the state.

“Our main demands include a one-time agricultural loan waiver, urgent measures to save rapidly depleting groundwater and river pollution, a policy to ensure remunerative prices for all crops, etc.,” Mr. Panther.

“The government should work on a policy to make agriculture profitable, for which the announcement and purchase of crops at the minimum support price (MSP) is the first important step that must be taken by the government. Farmer suicides across the state are only on the rise, the government should forfeit all outstanding loans, whether private or government loans against farmers and workers,” he said. he declares.

A recent study on farmer suicide in Punjab by Ludhiana-based Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) found that in six districts of the state, up to 9,291 farmers died by suicide between 2000 and 2018 and about 88% of suicide cases were a fallout from agriculture-related debts.

Mr Pandher alleged that the state government was paying no attention to addressing the real problems of the state. “The Punjab government should make a law that guarantees the MSP. Also, immediate compensation and treatment should be arranged for owners, whose animals died due to nodular skin disease,” he said.
