Bhopal: Starting her journey from a nondescript village in Madhya Pradesh, sailor Ritika Dangi made the state proud again. MP water sports academy and daughter of a farmer Ritika won a gold medal in the Laser 4.7 ILCA-4 of the Psbuth Easter Meeting 2022 championship held in Garda, Malsesin, Italy.
Notably, MP State Sailing Academy players were sent to Italy for an exhibition tour to prepare for the Asian Games. Sports Minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia said the players are constantly working hard to qualify for the Asian Games.
“Ritika is our star star. Our academy has a lot of such players and the coaching staff is doing everything possible to keep producing such players. She will do wonders at the Asian Games,” Scindia said. Scindia congratulated Ritika on winning the medal and said the glory also highlights the world-class sports facilities offered by Madhya Pradesh.
The tough competition at the championship could be measured by the fact that 148 girls from different countries took part in the competition. Another academy sailor Neha Thakur placed 34th in the championship.
Ritika has been a consistent performer in recent years. Ritika had won a gold medal at the recently concluded Asian Sailing Championship in Abu Dhabi.
Ritika lives in Tajpura village, Narsinghgarh Tehsil, Rajgarh district. His father is a farmer. Village has a total of only 239 residing families. The star sailor comes from a village which has only 955 inhabitants according to the 2011 population census.
MP Sailing Academy Chief Instructor Arjun and Vishwamitra Award winner GL Yadav said Ritika and Neha were the top medal contenders at the Asian Games. “Our players not only win medals, but promise medals for important events like Asian Games and others,” Yadav said. He added that Ritika is the country’s next star after the Asian Games.
