Season’s first shipment of Alphonso mangoes arrives in Japan

In a major boost for export, the first batch of fresh mangoes of the season exported from Mumbai have arrived in Japan. Alphonso and Kesar mango varieties have been exported to the island nation.

A mango festival is organized in the capital Tokyo as part of Azadi ki Amrit Mahotsav, in collaboration with the Embassy of India, Japan and Invest India today, under which an exhibition and tasting mango will be held at various Lawson supermarket outlets.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on Saturday facilitated the first shipment of the export season of fresh mangoes from Mumbai to Japan.

Alphonso mangoes are a global hit due to their sunny yellow appearance and delicious taste. Named after Afonso de Albuquerque, these mangoes are one of the most consumed varieties in India.

Exports of domestic organic products are conducted under the Agricultural Export Policy of 2018, which also directed states to formulate their own policies, focusing on promoting exports of unique region-specific products and those benefiting a geographical indication certification.

APEDA has taken a number of export promotion activities and initiatives, through the development of virtual portals for organizing virtual trade fairs, a farmer login portal, an office electronics, a Hortinet traceability system, buyer-seller meetings, reverse buyer-seller meetings, specific product-campaigns, etc.

APEDA works closely with state governments to create infrastructure and promote state exports.

APEDA, a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Government of India, is the nodal agency for the promotion of Indian Agribusiness and Food Exports and is responsible for facilitating and promoting the export of horticulture, floriculture, processed foods, poultry products, dairy products and other agricultural products.

APEDA provides assistance to exporters under various components of its programs such as infrastructure development, quality development and market development. In addition, APEDA also organizes International Buyer and Seller Meetings (BSM), virtual trade fairs with importing countries to promote agricultural and processed food products.
