Chandīgarh: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha – an umbrella group comprising around 40 farmer organizations – today announced plans to organize a ‘rail roko’ protest across Punjab. The agitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Earlier this month, farmers’ unions met in dharna against industry bodies and local agency departments over water pollution allegations.
According to reports citing agricultural leaders, protesters will not interfere with road traffic. The agitation which will see the participation of all SKM member groups is undertaken to primarily demand the implementation of the MSP for crops.
The SKM also announced plans to stage a protest against the Aam Aadmi party-led government on August 3 over several issues, including non-payment of sugar cane royalties and compensation for cotton crops damaged by the whitefly. According to the farm chief, SKM representatives previously held a meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on April 17 and May 18 and discussed several issues including the release of dues for sugar cane growers. However, the payment has not yet been made.
He also raised the issue of government jobs for relatives of farmers who lost their lives in protests against now repealed farm laws, bounties on wheat, compensation for damage to basmati crop due to bad weather and compensation for cotton growers affected by whiteflies.
Dallewal also rejected the Minimum Support Price Committee formed by the Center and added that farmers’ organizations under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha would hold a one-day protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on August 22.
